Top tips for finding a cheap flight to Venice (VCE)
Book in the Goldilocks Window
We’re asked all the time if there’s a specific day of the week when airline tickets are cheapest. The truth is: There’s not. However, we do have recommendations on how far in advance of a trip you should start looking for flights to find the best deals. We call it the Goldilocks Window—not too soon, not too late. For domestic flights, that means booking 1–3 months before a trip. For international trips, the sweet spot is a little earlier, about 2–8 months ahead of a trip.
If you’re looking for a flight during peak travel season, like summer in Venice, or if you’re traveling for a wedding or other event without flexible travel dates, it’s best to plan even further in advance. If you want to visit Venice in July, you would be wise to start looking for flights in December, for example.
Last-minute deals are very rare during busy travel seasons. In fact, we see fares jump 21, 14, and 7 days ahead of departure dates, so it’s best to book before then at least.
Use the Greek Islands Trick
Like the Greek islands, Venice can be expensive to reach. Luckily, our beloved Greek Islands Trick works all over Europe. If you really want to fly from Boston to Venice in July, for example, you could be looking at airfare of $1,400 or more. Instead, check out fares to London or Milan, which can be found for under $800. Pair that with a low-cost regional airline ticket (sometimes under $150) from London to Venice, and you’ve saved yourself a few hundred dollars you can put toward a hotel. If you’re flying into another city in Italy—or even Switzerland—you can look into train tickets, too.
It takes a little more work to plan this type of trip, but it can potentially save a bundle.
Search alternative departure airports
Like the Greek Islands Trick, you can save money by looking for different airports on the departure side. Again, say you want to fly from Boston to Venice, but prices are more than you’re willing to spend. Look for flights out of New York instead. If you see a great deal, it’s likely worth the drive or train trip for the transatlantic leg of your flight.
We see deals every day from airports big and small all over the US, so no matter where you live, it’s a good idea to check out prices from elsewhere; if you see an amazing deal, look into what it will cost you to get to that airport.
Fly when it’s cheaper
Like much of Europe, Venice gets busy in the summer. This makes sense. The weather is warm, and kids are out of school so families can take longer trips. But, more visitors means airlines can charge more for flight tickets.
The more flexible you can be with your travel dates the better. We love traveling during shoulder seasons, the periods just before and after a destination’s peak season. That’s April–May and September–November in Venice. The weather is still nice, but you’ll have fewer crowds and lower airfare and hotel rates than in the height of summer.
You can save even more by visiting in the winter. Really, there’s no bad time to visit Venice. It’s beautiful in all seasons and typically doesn't get too cold.
Even if you are traveling during the summer, you can still save money by looking for flights on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays. These are the cheapest days to fly, while Fridays and Sundays are usually the most expensive.
Set alerts for specific trips
You don’t have to tell us twice that tracking ever-changing airfare is hard work. The good news is that technology can do some of that work for you.
Set up fare alerts for your travel dates, being sure to add multiple alerts if your dates or departure cities are flexible, and you’ll get an email when prices drop into your target range or by a significant amount. All you have to do is book. It’s best to do this before the Goldilocks Window we talked about before so you can take advantage of the deals that come up during that time.
Venice is easy to reach from Europe but not so easy to reach from elsewhere. Most visitors will have at least one connection, likely somewhere in Europe.
