Book in the Goldilocks Window
Our favorite time to book flights is the period that’s not too close to your ideal departure date and not too far away. It’s just right, and that’s why we call it the Goldilocks Window. For domestic flights, the window where we’ve seen the best deals is about 1–3 months before your trip, and for international flights it’s about 2–8 months. If you plan to travel during high season, book on the earlier side. So, if you plan to visit Mexico City during the busy season in April, start looking for flights around October.
While we wish flight prices dropped at the last minute, that’s rarely the case, especially during busy travel periods. Fare jumps happen pretty reliably at the 2-, 14-, and 7-day marks before flights, so book before then if you can.
Use the Greek Islands Trick
The Greek Islands Trick is one of our favorite tricks for finding cheap flights to the Greek Islands, but it can work for Mexico City, too. If it’s too expensive to fly to Mykonos, we recommend people look for flights to London or Paris, and then find a regional budget flight for the last leg. It’s the same idea here: Look for the cheapest flight that gets you close to where you want to go, then figure something out for the last leg.
For example, airports in Texas often have great deals to Mexico City. If you’re traveling from Detroit in the spring and flights are around $700, look for flights to Houston instead. If you find a flight from Detroit to Houston for $200 or so, it could be worth finding another flight from Houston to Mexico City. It takes more work and time, but it could save you a ton of money.
Search alternative departure airports
Travelers living near Hartsfield-Jackson may have never thought about flying out of another airport. This makes sense when the world’s busiest airport is at your doorstep. But believe it or not, there could be situations when you could save money by taking a flight from elsewhere. We see deals from all sorts of airports, so try searching for flights from Montgomery, Alabama, or even Florida airports if you have the time to drive. You could even search farther afield, which may seem counterintuitive. If you see a flight deal from New York City to Mexico City for $270, it could be worth searching for a $150 deal from Atlanta to NYC. In other words, even Atlanta-area residents could benefit from checking out deals from other airports before booking a trip.
Fly when it’s cheaper
Spring is high season in Mexico City, which means airlines can charge more for flights. To beat the high prices that come with supply and demand, fly during shoulder seasons—the period on either side of the high and low season. In Mexico City that’s September–October. You’ll still get nice weather, but you’ll also avoid the crowds and likely find cheaper prices. Or visit during low season for the best deals. That’s July–August in Mexico City, when it’s hot and rainy. But if you plan to visit museums and don’t mind warm weather, you could save a ton.
If traveling outside of the peak season isn’t an option for you, be sure to look at fares on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays, which are typically the cheapest days to fly. Avoid the busiest: Fridays and Sundays.

In both terminals, the Salon Beyond CitiBanamex lounges offer beer, wine, spirits, snacks, and wifi (available for CitiBank customers). Lounge 10, the Grand Lounge Elite locations, and the Elite Lounge Mastercard offer similar amenities, plus showers, massages, and golf cart service to your gate. They are available for Mastercard customers or can be accessed for three hours for a fee. These lounges are also on PriorityPass. VIPort Lounge has snacks and beverages, a children’s play area, and wifi. It is available for a fee or with a PriorityPass membership.
Also in Terminal 1, the American Airlines lounge is located near Hall H. It offers snacks, hot food, beer and wine, a full bar, internet terminals, and wifi. Those traveling in business or first class, with AAdvantage Platinum status or higher, with Oneworld Emerald or Sapphire status, with Alaska Mileage Plan MVP Gold status or higher, or with the airline’s invite-only ConciergeKey status can use the lounge. You can also purchase a day pass for $150, depending on capacity. Citi AAdvantage Executive World Elite Mastercard holders also have access to the lounge. The United Club in Terminal 1 has snacks, a full bar, wifi, printers, newspapers, and flight monitors. Those flying United Polaris or business class, with Star Alliance Gold status, with a United Club membership, or with a United Club credit card can use the lounge. Day passes are available for $59.
In Terminal 2, the Aeromexico Salon Premier, has snacks, showers, spa services, a full bar, and wifi. The Terrazza Premier Aeromexico by Heineken has similar amenities, with the showers and spa services. Premier Lounge members, those with Premier Lounge complimentary passes from Aeromexico, and passengers traveling in Premier Class have access to the lounge. What are the rules for traveling with pets to MEX?
If you’re traveling from the US, your dog or cat cannot have signs of an infectious or contagious disease or any wounds. Pets will be inspected on arrival at the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Office. There are additional rules and restrictions for birds and other animals. Within the airport, your pet will need to be in a carrier.

What are the transportation options for getting from MEX to Mexico City?
There are a couple of ways to get from MEX to Mexico City:
- By rideshare or taxi: The roughly seven mile trip from the airport to Mexico City can take 15 minutes with light traffic and up to 40 during rush hour. Uber operates at MEX, with fees in the $12–15 range. That’s about what a taxi will cost, too.
- By public transportation: There is a Metrobus from MEX to Downtown Mexico City. It costs about $1.50; a Metrobus Smart Card can be purchased from machines inside the airport. The bus waits near door 6 outside Terminal 1 and near door 3 in Terminal 2. It takes about 45 minutes.
How long is the flight to Mexico City?
From the East Coast of the US to Mexico City, the flight time is about 5–6 hours. From the Midwest, it’s around 4. From Texas, it’s closer to 2. And from the West Coast, it’s 3–4. There are about 20 US cities with nonstop flights to Mexico City, mostly in Texas, Florida, and California, but also New York, Chicago, Detroit, Atlanta, Salt Lake City, and more. From most of the country, you can reach Mexico City with a direct or one-stop flight.
