Top tips for finding a cheap flight to Mexico
Book in the Goldilocks Window
The Goldilocks Window is when we recommend you start looking for flights. It’s the period that’s not too soon before your trip and not too far away, and the time period we’ve seen the best deals. The window falls 1-3 months before a domestic trip and 2-8 months before an international trip. If you’re planning to travel during the high season, start looking on the earlier end.
For anyone booking a flight during high season or a trip that requires specific dates, like around the December holiday season, or if you’re traveling for a summer wedding, it’s best to book in opposite seasons. Start looking in December for a summer wedding trip, and look in June or July for a December getaway. While airfare prices change all the time, we’ve seen fare jumps happen pretty reliably at the 21-, 14-, and 7-day mark before departure dates. So if possible, at least book before that point.
Use the Greek Islands Trick
Even if you’re watching fares like a hawk, some airfares never seem to get any cheaper. But before you give up on visiting Cancún over spring break, try our Greek Islands Trick. The idea is to get as close to your final destination as possible, then search for a budget airline flight or other option for the final leg. It works especially well for the Greek Islands but can be used for any busy destination during peak travel season.
So if your heart is set on Cancún in March but flights from your home airport in Boston are out of your price range, try getting as close as you can. Miami and other airports in Florida and Houston and other airports in Texas have lots of daily flights to Cancún, and often some of the best deals. If you can find a cheap flight from Boston to Houston, then a cheap flight from Houston to Cancún, it could be worth the extra flight and logistics.
Search alternative departure airports
We see deals from airports big and small every day. Like with the Greek Islands Trick, playing around with airports can help save you money. Let’s stick with the Boston to Cancún example. If flights from Boston to Cancún are prohibitively expensive, search for flights out of Philadelphia or New York. Sure, you’ll have to drive a couple of hours, but you could also save a few hundred dollars.
Fly when it’s cheaper
One of the best ways to find cheap flights is to fly during the off-season. For much of Mexico, that’s in the summer. Shoulder seasons, the periods on either side of a destination’s high and low seasons, are also a great time to travel because you’re still likely to get good weather but can also take advantage of lower airfare and hotel prices. For much of Mexico, shoulder season is May–June and September–October. Thanksgiving is also a hidden cheap week to travel internationally because most American travelers take flights within the US.
If you do plan to travel during high season, there are still ways to save. Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays are generally the least expensive days to fly. Avoid Fridays and Sundays, the most expensive days, if possible.
Set alerts for specific trips
Take it from us: Tracking fluctuating airfare is hard work! Luckily, technology can take the work off your hands. Set a fare alert for your Mexico itinerary, and you’ll get emails when fares drop into your price range or by a significant amount. If your dates are flexible, set a few alerts. And if you live near or can get to more than one airport, set alerts for all of them. Or, sign up for Going, and we’ll monitor all flights from your home airport and let you know when we find the best deals. Take these steps ahead of the Goldilocks Window we talked about to make sure you’re getting the best deals.
The most-visited cities in Mexico are well-serviced by US and other airlines. There are at least a dozen airlines offering flights from nearly 40 US cities to Mexico. Cancún, Mexico City, Los Cabos, and Puerto Vallarta are especially easy to reach. You can get to one of those destinations from most US cities nonstop or with one connection.
Frequently asked questions about flying to Mexico
When is high season in Mexico?
Mexico is a big country, and different areas have different high seasons. That said, the high season in much of the country—especially areas with beaches—is from December through April. Peak season in Los Cabos is from December–March when people in the US want to escape cold temperatures and when whale watching is best. Tulum and Cancún are also busy during this period and get especially busy in March and April when schools in the US are on spring break. Mexico City is also busy in the spring, from March–May.
When is the best time to visit Mexico?
High season is also a great time to visit most of Mexico weather-wise. Like we mentioned above, whale watching in Los Cabos is a big draw from December–March. And in Oaxaca, Tulum, Cancún, and other beachy destinations, spring weather is warm enough to swim but not too hot or humid to do other activities.
Most tourists try to avoid hurricane season from June–October. Shoulder seasons, like November and May, are a great time to find deals to these destinations. In Mexico City, March–May have warm daytime weather with little to no rain. Slow season in Mexico City is June–October due to common afternoon rainstorms. But if you don’t mind a little rain (the city has plenty of museums to dip into), summer and early fall are a great time to save money on hotels and flights.
How many airports are there in Mexico?
There are more than 100 airports in Mexico, but most tourists will use a handful. Cancún, Mexico City, Playa del Carmen, Puerto Vallarta, Cabo San Lucas, Oaxaca, Tulum, and Guadalajara are the most-visited cities in Mexico.
Cancún International Airport (CUN) is the most likely to have flights from the US. There are direct flights to Cancún from 38 cities all across the country. San José del Cabo International Airport (SJD) is where visitors fly into Los Cabos. There are about two dozen US cities that offer direct flights to that airport and about the same number of cities with flights to Puerto Vallarta International Airport (PVR).
Mexico City International Airport (MEX) is the country’s largest airport and one of the biggest in the world. There are direct flights to Mexico City on major carriers from about 20 US cities. There are about a dozen cities with direct flights to Guadalajara International Airport (GDL). Oaxaca International Airport (OAX) is harder to reach, with direct flights from only four US cities. Tulum used to require a transfer through Cancún, but as of the end of 2023, Aeroméxico will launch direct flights from Chicago and San Francisco to Tulum, coinciding with the opening of the city’s new Felipe Carrillo Puerto Airport.
Which city in Mexico is the easiest to get to?
Tourist hot spots in Mexico are easy to reach from the US. There are direct flights to Cancún from all over the country. Same goes for Cabo, Puerto Vallarta, and Mexico City. For other destinations, like Oaxaca, Guadalajara, or Tulum, you might need a connection. If you live in California or Texas, your odds of getting a direct flight to large and mid-sized cities in Mexico are pretty high.
Which city in Mexico is the shortest flight from the US?
The shortest flight from the US to Mexico depends on where in Mexico you’re going and where in the US you’re coming from. If you live in San Diego or LA, for example, a destination like Cabo or elsewhere on the Baja Peninsula will have the shortest flight. If you’re in Texas or anywhere in the middle of the country, the quickest flight is to Monterrey, though Mexico City isn’t much farther. From the East Coast, and especially Florida, your shortest flight option is to Cancún.
Which city in Mexico has the most direct flights from the US?
Cancún is the most popular city for US travelers and has the most direct flights from the US. There are at least 38 cities across the country that offer nonstop flights to Cancún.
What are the rules for traveling with pets to Mexico?
If you’re traveling from the US, your dog or cat cannot have signs of an infectious or contagious disease or any wounds. Pets will be inspected on arrival at the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Office. There are additional rules and restrictions for birds and other animals.
How long is the flight to Mexico?
The US and Mexico are both large countries, so the flight time depends on where you’re coming from and where you’re flying. From New York and elsewhere on the East Coast, as well as most Midwest cities, the flight to Cancún ranges from 3-4 hours. From Florida, it’s an hour and 45 minutes. From cities in Texas, it’s about 2.5 hours. From Phoenix, Denver, cities in California, and elsewhere on the West Coast, the flight to Cancún is 4-6 hours, depending on your departure city.
From the East Coast to Mexico City is about 5-6 hours; from the Midwest, it’s around 4; from Texas, it’s closer to 2; and from the West Coast, it’s 3-4. If you’re flying from LA or Texas to Oaxaca, the flight time is 3-4 hours. Most US cities do not have direct flights to Oaxaca, and you’ll have to make a connection, which could put the flight time anywhere from 6-10 hours. Flight times to Los Cabos range from 2-3 hours for flights from California to 6 hours for flights from the East Coast.
