If the place you want to fly is expensive, look at fares in the general area. Let’s pretend you want to fly from Phoenix to Santorini in June, but tickets are $1,200 roundtrip. But look, flights to London are only $300! Fly to London, then book a flight between London and Santorini. Often, smaller, discount airlines in Europe have great deals that don’t show up when you’re searching for an international trip.
Look for the cheapest flight you can find that gets you within a couple of hours flight of where you want to go, then buy a separate flight to close the gap. Depending on where you end up, you could even skip the second flight and take a train or ferry instead. We call this the Greek Islands Trick but you can use it for any pricey final destination.
