Over the years, we’ve come up with a few tips and tricks for finding cheap flights. One we immediately tell people is to book during the Goldilocks Window. That’s the period not too close to your flight and not too far away. For domestic travel, it’s about 1–3 months before a departure date, and for international travel it’s about 2–8 months out.
If you’re booking during a peak travel season, however, or for a wedding or other trip that requires specific dates, we recommend planning even further in advance. If, for example, you want to visit Charlotte in July, a busy time, you should start looking for flights in March. Last-minute deals are few and far between during busy travel seasons, with fare jumps happening 21, 14, and 7 days in advance of the flight, so it’s best to book before those points if at all possible.
Use the Greek Islands Trick
The Greek Islands Trick is, like it sounds like, a great tip for finding cheaper flights to the Greek islands; however, it can work all over the world. Basically, you look for the cheapest flight you can find that gets you close to your destination, then find a cheap regional flight or take another mode of transit for the last leg.
If flights to Charlotte are out of your price range, look for flights to Raleigh; Columbia, South Carolina; Richmond, Virginia; or even Atlanta. From there you can look for a second cheap flight or rent a car to get the rest of the way to Charlotte. Yes, it involves more work and time, but it could save you a few hundred bucks.
Search alternative departure airports
This is like the Greek Islands Trick but in reverse. Looking for flights outside of your home airport could also save you money. If you live in San Diego and flights to Charlotte are prohibitively expensive, check for flights out of LA. If they’re significantly cheaper, it could be worth the drive or train ride. You could even look farther away, like Denver. If you see an amazing deal from there, check for a cheap flight from San Diego to Denver. There are more logistics, but sometimes being creative with your itinerary can save you a bunch of money.
Fly when it’s cheaper
One of the easiest ways to save money on a trip is to fly when it’s cheaper; luckily for visitors to Charlotte, the cheaper seasons are actually the better times to visit. Summer is the busiest and most expensive time to visit, but March–May has the best weather. You’ll get warm, sunny days that aren’t too hot, flowers, and local festivals without the crowds of summer. September–November is another great time to visit, and it’s not as busy as the summer.

When is the best time to visit Charlotte?
While summer is the busiest season in Charlotte, it’s actually not the most ideal time to visit. Temperatures can reach up to 100°F, and it’s expensive and busy. The shoulder seasons, from March–May and September–November, are the best times to visit for great weather, fewer crowds, and fun events.
In March and April, Charlotte hosts Shout, a festival of arts, dancing, music, and food in the Uptown neighborhood. Tuck Fest, a celebration of outdoor activities, also takes place in April. If you’re looking for fall foliage, visit toward late October, when leaves in North Carolina start to turn. Be warned that hurricane season is from June–November, though Charlotte hasn’t had as many hurricanes as cities closer to the coast. Still, it could be rainy and windy, but this also means prices are generally cheaper.

There are two American Airlines Admirals Club lounges at CLT. Both offer snacks, a full bar, premium food and beverages for purchase, TVs, and free wifi. American Airlines travelers flying first or business class, Citi/AAdvantage Executive World Elite MasterCard cardholders with an AA boarding pass, ConciergeKey members with an AA boarding pass, and AirPass members with Admirals Club privileges can access the lounge. Day passes are also available for $59.
The Centurion Lounge on the Mezzanine level at the intersection of Concourses D and E has a self-serve buffet, a full-service bar, WiFiphone rooms, a family room, and showers with toiletries. American Express Platinum, Business Platinum, and Corporate Platinum cardholders can use the lounge, as can those with a Delta SkyMiles Reserve card or Reserve Business card from American Express.
The Club CLT in Concourse A has snacks and beverages, QR-code ordering, workstations, TVs, wifi, and showers. It is available on Priority Pass, or passengers can purchase a $50 day pass.
There are two Minute Suites at CLT. Both have private rooms with daybeds, DirecTV and Netflix, wifi, a minibar with drinks and snacks for purchase, and showers. They can be booked for one hour for $45, then in additional 15-minute increments for $11.25 per hour.

- By public transportation: The CATS Sprinter Route 5 runs from the airport to Charlotte’s city center. Buses operate every 20 minutes on weekdays and every 30 minutes on weekends and in the evenings.
