Over the years, we’ve come up with tips and tricks to find the best airfare deals. The Goldilocks Window is one of them. The best window to find a cheap flight is 1-3 months before a domestic flight or 2-8 months before an international flight. But if you’re booking during peak travel season or have specific travel dates you can’t change, we recommend planning even further in advance.

So if you’re planning a January trip to Aruba, you’d be wise to start looking for fares in July. Last-minute deals are few and far between during peak tourist times, so resist the urge to wait until it’s too late, just hoping flights will drop. We’ve seen that fare jumps happen at the 21-, 14-, and 7-day marks ahead of trips. If you can, at least book before those dates.

Even if you’re watching flights diligently, some flights never seem to get any cheaper. Before you give up on dreams of white sand beaches and palm trees, try our Greek Islands Trick. Essentially, you get as close as you can to your destination, then find a budget airline, ferry or other way to get between there and your final destination. It’s a great way to get to the Greek islands during high season, but it really works for anywhere.

If you really want to fly from Atlanta to Aruba for a winter getaway, you could be looking at flights upwards of $500. Instead, check out fares to Miami or cities in Central America like Panama. If you can find a $200 flight to one of those destinations, then you can search for a budget airline flight to Aruba.

Travelers living in New York are probably used to searching for flights from JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark. With so many large airports in the vicinity, why would you look anywhere else? But believe it or not, there could be situations when you could save money by looking at flights from other states.

Orlando, for example, often has very cheap, direct flights to Aruba. If you see a $180 flight from Orlando to Aruba, it could be worth taking another cheap flight from New York to Orlando. If you’re traveling during peak season, you could save a bucket load of money by checking departures from other airports before booking your trip.

Tourists flock to Aruba in the winter, from November to March, and especially in January and February. This makes sense. Much of the US is cold, and Aruba is reliably warm and sunny. This is also, unsurprisingly, the most expensive time to travel.

Shoulder seasons, the periods on either side of high and low season, are great times to find deals. That’s April–June and September–October. Hurricane season runs through the summer to October, but Aruba rarely sees hurricanes. If you don’t mind a few days of rain and some wind, traveling during the summer can also be a good option for cheap flights.

But if you’re dying to get away during the winter—and we don’t blame you—there are still ways to find cheaper flights. Play around with departure dates. The more flexible you can be, the better. Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays are generally the cheapest days to fly, while Fridays and Sundays are the most expensive.

Flight alerts are a savvy traveler’s best friend. They’re one of the easiest ways to find deals with very little effort. All you have to do is set up an alert for your travel dates to Aruba and wait for an email alerting you that prices have dropped. If you’re flexible with your plans, set alerts for a few different dates.

Aruba is easy to get to if you live on the East Coast of the US, Chicago, Florida, or Central America. The flight is longer from Amsterdam but also easy (as Aruba is part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands). If you live elsewhere in the US, you’ll likely have to make a connection, and sometimes because of flight times, those layovers can be longer than you would expect. From the rest of the world, you’ll also have to stop in Amsterdam, Central America, or in the US.
