Top tips for finding a cheap flight to Arizona
Book in the Goldilocks Window
While there’s no specific day of the week when airline prices drop, we do have tips on how far in advance of a trip you should book your tickets. The best deals are found in what we call the Goldilocks Window—not too late, but not too soon before your departure date. For domestic flights, that means booking 1-3 months before a trip. For international flights, you have a bit more time, from 2-8 months out.
That said, if you’re booking a flight during high travel season or if you have no flexibility on your dates (like if you’re traveling for a wedding), we recommend planning on the earlier end of those windows. If you hope to visit Arizona during January, a peak travel time, start looking for flights in July. We’ve seen fares reliably jump 21, 14, and 7 days before flights, so if possible, at least book before those dates.
Use the Greek Islands Trick
Even if you’re diligently checking flights every day, some never seem to get any cheaper. But before you give up your dream of visiting the Grand Canyon, try our Greek Islands Trick.
This is when you get as close as possible to your final destination, then find a budget airline flight, train, or other option to reach your final destination. It’s so named because it works particularly well for getting to the Greek islands, but it can work for any destination.
If flights to Grand Canyon National Park Airport or to Sedona are crazy expensive, look at flights to nearby cities, like Las Vegas or LA. Those cities often have great flight deals, and they have different busy seasons than Arizona. Once there, you can rent a car for the last leg of your journey. This can also work for other cities in Arizona, like Sedona.
Search alternative departure airports
If you live in Denver, you probably don’t regularly search for flights from elsewhere. Why would you when you live near one of the largest airports in the world? But we see great deals to Phoenix from all over the place. If you see an insane deal from Los Angeles, like a deal under $100, it could be worth the extra flight from Denver to LA. It takes more logistics and planning, but you could save a few hundred dollars during peak travel season.
Fly when it’s cheaper
As we’ve established, winter is a busy time to visit much of Arizona. Try traveling during the shoulder season: late spring, before it’s too hot, or late fall before the winter tourists arrive en masse. Note that despite high temperatures, summer is also a busy time to visit the Grand Canyon, likely because kids are out of school and families can take trips. If your trip centers around the Grand Canyon, spring and fall are still shoulder seasons and a great time to hike when it’s not too hot.
The more flexible you can be with your travel dates, the better your chances of finding cheap flights. Look for flights on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays, which are typically the cheapest days to fly. If you can, avoid flying on Fridays and Sundays, which are often the most expensive.
Set alerts for specific trips
Setting flight alerts is a great way to keep track of airline prices without having to check them daily. Set up an alert for your specific itinerary—or set multiple if you have flexible dates—and wait for an email telling you prices have dropped to your price range or by a significant amount. Do this ahead of the Goldilocks Window, if possible, to get the best deals.
Arizona has several large airports and is well-connected to the rest of the country. Most American travelers can reach Arizona with one connection or less. Those visiting from Europe, Mexico, and Canada can usually reach Phoenix with one stop or less. Travelers coming from Asia, Africa, Australia, or New Zealand might have two stops, depending on exactly where you’re coming from.
Frequently asked questions about flying to Arizona
When is the high season in Arizona?
Arizona has a long busy season, from October to May, when temperatures are mild and people can comfortably hike in the Grand Canyon or places like Sedona. But it gets especially busy from January to April, when snowbirds settle into their winter homes, and visitors from cold weather states flock south for some relief.
When is the best time to visit Arizona?
The best time to visit is spring and fall, from March–May and September–November. The weather is warm in the desert but not too hot, and cool in the mountains but not too cold. March to May is an especially beautiful time to visit because wildflowers and the famous saguaro cacti are in bloom. In summer months, hotels and flights are cheaper, and there are fewer crowds, but temperatures can reach dangerously high temperatures. If you plan to visit in the summer, you’ll save money but should heed warnings from park rangers and the National Weather Service about whether you should embark on hikes or other outdoor activities.
How many airports are there in Arizona?
There are 83 airports in Arizona, according to the state’s department of transportation. But there are a few that tourists use much more than others.
Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is by far the largest airport in the state and one of the largest in the country. It’s a major hub for American Airlines and Southwest Airlines and sees hundreds of domestic flights per day, as well as dozens of international flights.
Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport also serves Phoenix, though it’s significantly smaller. Allegiant Air operates most flights out of this airport.
Tucson International Airport is another fairly large airport, with flights around the US, especially to relatively nearby cities like LA, Dallas, and Denver. Grand Canyon National Park Airport is small but useful for tourists specifically visiting the Grand Canyon.
Which city in Arizona is the easiest to get to?
Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport sees more than 45 million visitors per year and operates flights from most major airlines to cities around the US and the world. Most travelers from the US can reach Phoenix with one connection or a direct flight. If you’re visiting from outside of the US, you’ll most likely fly into Phoenix.
What are the rules for traveling with pets to Arizona?
If you’re traveling from another US state, you’ll have to check with your airline’s pet guidelines. Most airlines require pets to be kept in a carrier during travel. If you’re visiting from outside of the US, follow the rules on the U.S. Department of Agriculture website. There are requirements, including rabies and other vaccinations, travel documents, and more.
How long is the flight to Arizona?
Flight times to Arizona depend on where you’re coming from and where in Arizona you’re heading. If you’re flying to Phoenix from New York, for example, the flight time is 5 hours and 15 minutes. But if you're flying to Tucson or Grand Canyon Village it’s closer to 7 hours with a connection. Those times are similar if you’re coming from anywhere in the Northeast.
Flights from the Southeast, like Charleston, Atlanta, or Miami, to Phoenix range from 4–6 hours (and an hour or two longer with a connection to other locations). Flights from Chicago to Phoenix and Tucson are about 3.5 hours nonstop, and it takes about 5 hours and 15 minutes with a stop to reach Grand Canyon Village.
Flights from Seattle, Portland, or Denver range from 2–3 hours, and flights from California range from 1.5–2 hours to Phoenix and Tucson. If you’re flying from Texas, flights are about 2.5 hours, with plenty of nonstop options from Dallas, Austin, and Houston.
