Top tips for finding a cheap flight to Jamaica
Book in the Goldilocks Window
We get asked all the time about the best day of the week to book airline tickets, and the truth is there is no specific day when fares are magically cheaper. But we do have recommendations on how far in advance you should book to find the best deals. We call it the Goldilocks Window, the period that’s in a sweet spot not too close to your departure date and not too far away. It’s about 1-3 months before domestic flights. For international trips, you have a little longer, from 2-8 months before your vacation. If you’re planning to travel during the high season, start looking on the earlier end of those windows.
For example, if you’re hoping to take a beach vacation to Jamaica in January, during peak season, start looking for flights as early as July. Another thing we know is that fares jump at the 21-, 14-, and 7-day marks before flights. We hope you’re not waiting until the last minute to book your winter holiday, but if so, book before those points if at all possible.
Use the Greek Islands Trick
Don’t be fooled by the name. Our Greek Islands Trick can work for other island destinations, too. The goal is to get as close as you can to your final destination for the cheapest price, then figure out the last leg. For Greek islands, this often means flying to a city like London, then taking a budget airline flight for the last leg.
It’s a bit trickier for Jamaica because there are fewer budget flights in this part of the world, but it’s still possible to find a great deal by flying to an alternative airport. Fort Lauderdale and Orlando, for example, have lots of cheap, quick flights to Jamaica. If you live in Denver and flights to Jamaica are expensive, try looking at flight prices to Florida and then seeing if you can find a budget option from there. A recent search found fares as cheap as $41.
It requires more planning and logistics to navigate two flights and sometimes two airlines, but it could be worth the savings.
Search alternative departure airports
If you’re trying to get from Madison, Wisconsin, to Jamaica during peak season, you could be seeing flights upwards of $600. But what about flights from Chicago? Airlines operate flights from both O’Hare (ORD) and Midway (MDW) to Jamaica. Because they’re much larger airports with more flight options, they also often have better deals.
If you can find a $250 roundtrip flight from Chicago to Jamaica, it would be worth driving or taking the bus from Madison to O’Hare.
Fly when it’s cheaper
December–April are the most expensive months to visit Jamaica, and for good reason. Most of the US is cold and snowy, and people want a break somewhere tropical and warm. These months also cover spring break in much of the country, when kids are out of school, and families can take a trip.
The more flexible you can be with your travel dates, the better your chances of finding cheaper flights. Shoulder seasons are a savvy traveler’s favorite time to go anywhere. These periods tucked on either side of a destination’s high and low seasons usually offer better weather than the low season and better deals than the high season.
For Jamaica, that’s October-early December and May-June. Jamaica’s off-season is in the summer, so this is when prices are cheapest. It’s slightly hotter than the rest of the year and can see more rain. But overall, Jamaica’s temperatures don’t fluctuate too much throughout the year, so if you can travel during the summer, you’re likely to still have a great trip and save even more money.
No matter what time of year you travel, try to fly on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays if you can. Avoid Fridays and Sundays, which are the most expensive days to fly.
Set alerts for specific trips
Keeping track of airfare as it fluctuates can be frustrating, but flight alerts can help. For the best deals, set alerts for a few flexible dates and nearby departure airports. Frequently asked questions about flying to Jamaica
When is high season in Jamaica?
Jamaica’s high season runs from December to April, when visitors from around the US want to escape cold temperatures. Reggae Sumfest, usually in mid-July, draws some crowds, and hotels can fill up, but it’s still nowhere as busy as in the winter.
When is the best time to visit Jamaica?
Jamaica has pretty fantastic weather year-round, so there’s no true best time to visit. Most travelers think the best time is from December–to March, so they can get a change of pace from the cold weather in their home cities. Summer is slightly hotter and can have more rain, but there are also cheaper prices on flights and hotels. For perfect weather and to avoid the crowds, visit in the shoulder season, like November or May.
How many airports are there in Jamaica?
There are three international airports in Jamaica. Norman Manley International Airport (KIN) in Kingston is the best option if you plan to visit the capital, Port Antonio, or the Blue Mountains. Sangster International Airport (MBJ) in Montego Bay is where you’ll fly if you’re headed to Montego Bay, Ocho Rios, or Negril. This is the most popular airport for tourists staying in beach resorts. Then there’s Ian Fleming International Airport (OCJ), the newest airport. This airport is in Ocho Rios but is only for small aircraft. Kingston and Sangster are the airports most likely to have cheap flights from the US.
Which city in Jamaica is the easiest to get to?
Montego Bay is the easiest airport to reach from most US cities. There are direct flights from about a dozen US cities to Montego Bay (MBJ), as well as direct flights from several European cities. If you live in New York, Atlanta, or several cities in Florida, you can also get to Kingston (KIN) with a direct flight.
Which city in Jamaica is the shortest flight from the US?
The shortest flight depends on where you live. Jamaica is a small country, so whether you’re flying to Montego Bay or Kingston, the flight time doesn’t change much. It more depends on which airport you can reach directly. From most of the US, the flight to Montego Bay is the shortest because there are more direct flights from US cities to Sangster International Airport.
But if you live in cities on the East Coast with direct flights to Kingston, the flight time between Kingston and Montego Bay is about equal. The flight from New York to both cities is four hours, for example. If you live farther west than Denver, there are no direct flights to Jamaica, and you’ll have to make a stop.
Which city in Jamaica has the most direct flights from the US?
Montego Bay has the most direct flights from the US. There are nonstop flights from more than 20 US cities to Montego Bay, including New York City, Chicago, Denver, Atlanta, Miami, St. Louis, Dallas, Houston, Austin, Boston, Baltimore, and more.
What are the rules for traveling with pets to Jamaica?
Pets are only allowed to enter Jamaica through Kingston, so if you plan to fly directly to Montego Bay, leave your pet at home. In addition, Jamaica requires all pets to have an ISO-compatible microchip, up-to-date rabies and other vaccines, and a rabies-neutralizing antibody test. Dogs must also have two negative fecal examinations, a flea and tick examination, a heartworm test, and more. The rules are very strict in Jamaica and, in some cases, require tests to be done months in advance of travel, so plan ahead.
How long is the flight to Jamaica?
The flight to Jamaica depends on where you’re coming from. If you’re flying from the East Coast, you have a much better chance of finding a direct flight. If you’re flying from the West Coast, no airlines offer direct flights, and you’ll have a layover, which can vary your flight time. Most flights from the West Coast take 8-9 hours with a layover.
From New York, Philadelphia, and elsewhere in the Northeast, as well as Chicago, the flight time to Jamaica is about 4 hours. From Washington, DC, it’s a little over 5 hours. From cities in Texas, it’s about 3.5 hours, while from Denver, it’s 5 hours and 15 minutes. The quickest flights are from Florida and take 1.5-2 hours, depending on which Florida city you’re departing from.
