Top tips for finding a cheap flight to Puerto Rico
Book in the Goldilocks Window
There’s no magic day of the week or month when airline tickets suddenly go on sale, but there are time periods when you’re most likely to find deals. We call those time periods the Goldilocks Window. These time periods are not too far away from your departure date and not too close. In this case, the just right time is 1-3 months before a domestic flight and 2-8 months before an international flight. If you’re planning to travel during a busy period, like summer or over holidays, start searching on the earlier end.
We’ve found that booking in the opposite season of peak times is a good way to find deals. Booking for a winter holiday trip in July, for example, or for a summer holiday in December. We’ve noticed fares almost always rise at the 21-, 14-, and 7-day marks. So at the very least, book more than three weeks ahead.
Use the Greek Islands Trick
We came up with the Greek Islands Trick as a way to find cheap flights to the Greek Islands, but it works for plenty of destinations. How it works is you get as close as you can to your final destination, then book a cheap budget airline flight or other form of transit to your final destination.
If you’re trying to visit Puerto Rico during peak season and flights from your city are expensive, look for flights to Miami instead. Lots of cities around the US have flight deals to Miami, and Miami has more flights to Puerto Rico than anywhere else in the country. New York also has lots of flights to Puerto Rico, so even though it might be geographically farther away than where you’re coming from, you could save money by finding a cheap flight to New York and then a cheap flight to San Juan.
Search alternative departure airports
If you live in Atlanta, you’ve probably never considered flying out of any other airport. With the world’s busiest airport in your backyard, why would you? But we see amazing flight deals from cities all over the US, and sometimes those are deals worth flying for.
If you see a $120 flight deal from Chicago to San Juan, for example, even adding a $200 flight from Atlanta to Chicago could save you money. Miami, New York, and Chicago often have great deals to Puerto Rico, but it’s worth checking airports around the country.
Fly when it’s cheaper
If you can be flexible with your travel dates, you can save a lot of money by traveling in the off-season. Summer is peak travel time in most of the world, which means airlines can charge more for tickets. On the other hand, October–November and January–March are low seasons in Puerto Rico and the months most likely to have flight deals. Shoulder seasons, like May–June and September, are great times to visit, less busy than peak summer, and slightly cheaper than high season.
Sometimes, though, you want to or have to travel during the high season. In that case, you should try to fly on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays, when fares are cheapest. If you can, avoid Fridays and Sundays, which are the most expensive days to fly.
Set alerts for specific trips
Keeping track of airfare can be time-consuming and a hassle. The good news is technology can make your life easier. Set a flight alert for your Puerto Rico travel dates, and you’ll get an email when fares drop to your selected price range. We recommend doing this well in advance of your trip, before the Goldilocks Window we mentioned, in order to get the best deals.
Puerto Rico is well connected to the East Coast, Midwest, and South. There are more than 120 daily nonstop flights between cities in those regions and San Juan. From most cities in the US, you can reach Puerto Rico with just one connection.
