Top tips for finding a cheap flight to Portland (PDX)
Book in the Goldilocks Window
People ask us all the time if there’s a day of the week that’s best for finding cheap flights. There’s not. However, there is a window when flight prices are generally cheapest. We call it the Goldilocks Window because it’s not too close to your departure date and not too far away. This sweet spot is about 1–3 months before a domestic trip and 2–8 months before an international trip.
If you plan to travel during peak travel season, though, it’s best to book even a little earlier. So for a July trip to Portland, start looking for flights around March. Last-minute deals are unfortunately few and far between during high seasons. In fact, prices reliably jump at the 21-, 14-, and 7-day points out from a trip, so book before those dates if at all possible.
Use the Greek Islands Trick
The Greek Islands Trick is one of our favorite ways to game the system and find cheap flights to expensive destinations like Santorini. Luckily, it can work just about anywhere. The idea is to get as close as you can to your final destination on the cheapest flight you can find. From there, you can take a regional flight, train, ferry, or drive the last leg.
In Greece, this often means flying into London and taking a regional flight to the islands. In Portland, it could mean looking for flights to Seattle or Sacramento. If you find a great deal to one of those cities or somewhere else nearby, it could be worth taking a second short flight from there to Portland. Sometimes, it can pay to be creative with your itinerary.
Search alternative departure airports
Similarly, you can save lots of money by flying out of an airport outside of your home city. If you live in Madison, Wisconsin, for example, flights to Portland might be out of your price range. Instead, try checking flights out of Chicago or Minneapolis. If you see a cheap flight, it could be worth driving or taking the bus to one of those airports. Yes, it’s more work and time, but it could save you a few hundred bucks on a summer vacation.
Fly when it’s cheaper
One of the easiest ways to save money on flights is to travel during the off season. That’s from around November–February in Portland. If you don’t mind cold weather and either aren’t visiting for outdoor activities or are visiting for winter activities (i.e. skiing on Mt. Hood), this is a great way to save on flights.
We also love traveling during shoulder seasons, the periods on the edge of a destination’s busy season. April, September, and October are shoulder months in Portland, when you’ll have nice weather but avoid the summer crowds and price hikes.
If traveling outside the peak season isn’t an option, try to at least fly on what are generally the cheapest days of the week: Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays. Fridays and Sundays are the most expensive.
Set alerts for specific trips
No matter how diligently you’re tracking airfare, work and life sometimes get in the way, meaning you could miss a good deal. You can avoid this if you set up fare alerts. Simply enter your dates and airports (being sure to set up multiple alerts if your dates or airports are flexible), and wait for an email telling you prices have dropped. All you have to do is book. We recommend setting up alerts before the Goldilocks Window we talked about above so you can see deals that pop up during that time.
