Top tips for finding a cheap flight to Peru
Book in the Goldilocks Window
We get asked all the time if there’s a certain day of the week when airline tickets are cheapest. There’s not, but there is a timeframe. It’s not too close to your departure date and not too far away either. We call this perfect time period the Goldilocks Window, and it’s about 1–3 months before a domestic flight and 2–8 months before an international flight. If you want to travel during high season, it’s best to start looking on the earlier end.
So, if you hope to visit Peru during peak season in June, it’s best to start looking for flights in December. Last-minute deals are few and far between during busy travel seasons. In fact, fares rise at the 21-, 14-, and 7-day points before a trip. Don’t hold out until the last minute, and book before those dates if you can.
Use the Greek Islands Trick
One of our favorite tips for finding cheaper flights to the Greek islands can also be used in South America. The Greek Islands Trick involves getting as close to your final destination as possible for the cheapest price, then finding a cheap regional flight or other mode of transit for the final leg.
If you want to fly from Chicago to Peru for a summer holiday but flights are out of your price range, look for flights to Mexico City instead. If you see a great deal, it’s worth checking for a cheap regional flight between Mexico City and Lima. Or, if you fly somewhere in Latin America first, you can then often fly directly into smaller, regional airports in Peru, not just Lima. This involves some playing around with airfare and pricing, but it could save you a bunch of money.
Search alternative departure airports
Similarly, we like to search for airfare from different departure airports than our home airport, just to make sure we’re not missing out on an amazing deal. If you live in San Diego, flights to Peru in the summer could be very expensive. But, what about from Los Angeles? If they’re significantly cheaper, it might be worth the drive or train ride to LAX.
Sometimes, you can save by looking even farther afield. If you live in Chicago, for example, flights to Peru could be upwards of $1,000. But, if you see a deal from Atlanta for $500, you might consider looking for a cheap flight from Chicago to Atlanta. Again, it’s more work, but the potential savings could be huge.
Fly when it’s cheaper
One of the simplest ways to save on airfare is to fly when other people aren’t. During busy seasons, airlines can hike up airfare due to increased demand. However, prices drop during the low season. That’s from December to February in Peru, and you can find amazing deals if you’re okay with a chance of rain.
Or, you can travel during the shoulder season, the periods just on the cusp of high season. That’s April and September in Peru. You’ll still have nice weather, but you’ll also have fewer crowds and lower prices than during high season.
Thanksgiving is another great time to save traveling to Peru because most US travelers fly domestically that week; many airlines discount international flights, so you can often snag a deal. Finally, you can save money by flying on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays, which are the cheapest days to fly. Fridays and Sundays are typically the most expensive.

Sometimes, it seems airfare never gets any cheaper, and checking it every day can drive you mad. That’s when technology can step in and help make sure you don’t miss a deal, while you use your energy to focus on other things.
Set up fare alerts for your travel dates, being sure to set up multiple if your dates or departure airports are flexible. Then, you’ll get an email when prices drop. All you have to do is book. We recommend doing this ahead of the Goldilocks Window we talked about above so you can see fares drop during that time.
Peru is not the easiest place to reach from the US. If you live in New York, Atlanta, Houston, or Los Angeles you can take a direct flight, but visitors from elsewhere in the country will have to make a connection in one of those cities. Still, most US travelers can reach Peru with just one stop.
If you’re traveling from Asia or Africa, there are no airports with direct flights, and your trip will be longer, likely 15–24 hours.
Frequently asked questions about flying to Peru
When is high season in Peru?
In general, high season in Peru runs from May to August, during the dry season. Weather is sunny and warm, and this is also when kids and college students are out of school, so families can travel. There are some exceptions, though. If you plan to visit the coast and are hoping for a beach holiday, December–February is the summer season in the southern hemisphere, and therefore the high season in that region.
When is the best time to visit Peru?
If your main goal is nice weather and to visit Machu Picchu, the best time to visit Peru is from May to August, which is also the high season. You’ll likely get good weather, which also means good views. If you’re planning a coastal beach vacation, visit from December to February.
The best times to visit to save money are during the rainy season, January and February outside of the coast. It typically rains in the afternoon, so if you’re okay with scheduling outdoor activities in the morning and visiting museums or other indoor activities in the afternoons, this could be a great way to save money. Shoulder seasons, April and September in much of Peru, are also good times to save and still get nice weather.
How many airports are there in Peru?
There are a handful of international airports in Peru, but visitors from the US will typically fly into Jorge Chávez International Airport (LIM) in Lima. It is the largest in Peru and the only airport with direct flights to and from the US.
Which city in Peru is the easiest to get to?
Lima, the capital, is the easiest city to reach. There are direct flights from a few US cities, a few European cities, and dozens of Central and South American cities.
What are the rules for traveling with pets to Peru?
If you plan to travel with your pet to Peru, you should check with your airline and airport for specific restrictions. To enter Peru, your pet will need a health certificate completed by a USDA-accredited veterinarian, as well as a rabies shot and other vaccines. Birds traveling from some states are banned, as are all rabbits.
How long is the flight to Peru?
The flight time to Peru depends on where you’re coming from. New York, Atlanta, Houston, and Los Angeles offer direct flights to Lima. From New York the flight is 8 hours, from Atlanta and Houston it’s about 6.5, and from LA it’s 8.5. From elsewhere in the US you’ll have to stop in one of these cities, and your flight time could range from 9–15 hours.
The flight time from London is 13 hours, and there are also direct flights from Amsterdam, Paris, and Madrid. From around South America flight times range from 1–8 hours. And from the rest of the world you’ll have to make a connection. Your flight time could be anywhere from 12–24 hours.
