Top tips for finding a cheap flight out of John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK)
Pay attention to the Goldilocks Window
In all our years of watching flight prices, we’ve learned a thing or two about timing. We’ve found that there’s a period of time before a flight—we call it the “Goldilocks Window”—when you’re most likely to get a good deal on a ticket. For domestic flights, it’s 1-3 months before a trip. For international travel, it’s 2-8 months beforehand.
If you’re planning to travel over a holiday or during the high season, however, we recommend planning even further ahead of the usual Goldilocks Window. For instance, if you need to fly during the December holidays, you should start checking out fares in July.
And although killer last-minute deals happen occasionally, they’re not as common as you’d hope. On the contrary, fares typically jump at the 21-day, 14-day, and 7-day points ahead of a flight, so your best bet is to book before those points if you can.
Try the Greek Islands Trick
Sometimes, when you’re dreaming of a very specific vacation spot, it can feel like the airfare to get you there never seems to get any cheaper. You can go somewhere else, of course, or bite the bullet and pay the higher fare—but before you do that, give the Greek Islands Trick a try.
Say you’ve got your heart set on a trip to Santorini. Even from busy JFK, flights can sometimes cost upwards of $1,000 (especially during the high season). Instead, take a peek at flights from JFK to Paris, which are known to drop below $500. Then, look at flights from Paris to Santorini. Even if that ticket is $250, you’re still looking at decent savings (which you can put toward one more night in your ocean-view hotel room).
The idea here is to get close to where you really want to be as cheaply as you can and then close the gap with a separate ticket on a low-cost airline, train, or ferry. The Greek Islands make an ideal example, hence the name, but it works just as well for destinations all over the globe. Sure, it involves a little bit more work on your part, but the savings can be substantial.
Consider other departure airports
New Yorkers tend to look at fares from all three of the big area airports, but have you ever thought about looking at fares departing from airports further away? It may sound counterintuitive, but sometimes there are airfare deals from faraway airports that are so cheap they’re worth the extra work of getting there in the first place.
If, for example, you’re casting a wider net for wild deals than just your home airports, you might see something like an eye-popping $120 roundtrip fare from DC to London or a $202 roundtrip fare from LA to Japan. And yes, you’ll need to tack on the price of a train ride to DC (under $100) or a flight to Los Angeles (~$200), but we think you’ll agree that the added ticket price and effort on your part will be worth it.
Stay as flexible as possible
Flexibility isn’t just a good goal for our bodies, it’s also frequently the key to finding cheap airfare. Traveling during the high summer season may be unavoidable for some people—the kids are out of school, for instance, or those diving lessons are only offered in the summer. Airlines respond to the higher demand with predictably higher ticket prices.
Travelers who can stay flexible with even small aspects of their plans stand a better chance of saving money. If you can avoid the peak summer season, the shoulder seasons (usually fall and spring) offer a great balance of lower prices and nice weather. If weather isn’t an issue, you can save even more traveling during the low season. And, if you have no option but to travel during the peak season, then at least aim for flying on the cheapest days to fly (Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays) and skip the most expensive days (Fridays and Sundays) if possible.
Set up airfare alerts
Signing up for email fare alerts is one of the easiest (and best) things you can do when you’re looking for a great deal. You’ll not only be notified when airfare for your desired itinerary drops into a specific range, but you’ll also be confident that you’re getting a good deal because you’ve been seeing the price drop.
We recommend signing up for these alerts several months before you plan to travel, so you can watch the fare fluctuate. When you see a great deal, you’ll know it. Remember that if you’re keeping your travel plans flexible, you’ll need to set up separate alerts for each potential itinerary.

How early should I arrive to John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) before my flight?
Generally speaking, travelers taking domestic flights are encouraged to get to the airport two hours before departure, and international travelers are told to get to the airport three hours beforehand. There are a few things you may want to take into consideration about your specific itinerary, however, that might mean you don’t have to get to JFK quite so early.
-
How big is the airport, and where is your gate? JFK is a huge and busy airport, so it may take you longer than you’d expect to get from curbside to your gate. The airport’s website lists the average amount of time it takes to walk to gates from each terminal’s security checkpoint, and it varies from 1-2 minutes for close gates to almost 20 minutes for gates further away from security. Note that those estimates don't consider any transfers between terminals you might have to make via the AirTrain.
-
Did you already check in online? Airlines have a cutoff time by which, if you haven’t checked in, you can’t get on the plane. It’s usually about 30-60 minutes before departure. If you’re unable to check in at home, allow for extra time at the airport to do so.
-
Are you checking a bag? Similarly, airlines also have a cutoff time by which you must get your bags checked (usually 45-60 minutes before departure), so be sure to give yourself enough time to do that if needed.
-
Is the airport busy? Even if you’re not traveling during peak times, wait times at JFK security can be 30 minutes or more (even for people with PreCheck). If you’re traveling during an especially busy time, expect longer lines. (And with ongoing construction, wait times for all sorts of things will likely be longer.) Security wait times are listed on the airport’s website, updated in real-time.
Although common wisdom might be to arrive at the airport 2-3 hours ahead of departure for a domestic or international flight (respectively), you might be able to get away with getting to JFK 1.5-2 hours early—so long as you’re traveling carry-on only, you checked in at home, you’re traveling when it’s not going to be especially busy, and your gate isn’t far from the security checkpoint. Otherwise, your best bet is to stick with the usual 2-3 hour guidelines.
