Top tips for finding a cheap flight to Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR)
Book in the Goldilocks Window
While we wish there was a day of the week when airline prices dropped, that’s not the case. However, there is a time period when flights are generally cheapest. It’s not too far ahead of your trip but not too close to your departure date either. We call it the Goldilocks Window. This sweet spot falls 1–3 months before a domestic flight and 2–8 months before an international flight.
That said, if you plan to travel during a busy period, like over Thanksgiving, you should start looking on the earlier side. In that case, you should start looking for flights around July. During busy travel seasons, last-minute deals are few and far between. Fares actually increase at the 21-, 14-, and 7-days points ahead of a trip, so book before those dates if at all possible.
Use the Greek Islands Trick
Sometimes, no matter how closely you’re watching fares, they never seem to get any cheaper. Before you give up and spend more on plane tickets than you planned, try our Greek Islands Trick. Despite the name, it can work in all sorts of situations.
If you really want to fly from St. Louis to Newark for Christmas, you could be looking at flights upwards of $550. Instead, check out fares to Boston, Philly, or LaGuardia. If you see a deal for under $400, it could be worth taking the train or renting a car for the last leg.
Search alternative departure airports
Similarly, flying out of different airports can save you money. Again, say you live in St. Louis but flights to Newark are out of your price range. Look for flights out of Chicago instead. Yes, it’s a drive or train trip, but you could save a few hundred bucks.
We see surprisingly cheap fares from airports, big and small, all over the country, and if you’re only looking at your home airport you could miss out on some amazing deals. It’s always a good idea to search for flights from nearby airports and play around with mixing and matching flights and alternate modes of transportation.
Fly when it’s cheaper
One of the best ways to save money and have a great trip is to travel when flights are cheaper. Summer, Thanksgiving, and Christmas are busy times to visit Newark and nearby New York City, so airlines can charge more for flights. But spring and fall aren’t as busy, so flights and hotels are cheaper, plus you’ll still get nice weather and avoid the crowds. Traveling during off season, like in January and February, can save you even more money.
If traveling outside of a busy season isn’t an option, you can still find cheaper flights by looking on days that aren’t as popular to fly. Try flying on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Saturdays, which are generally cheaper than Fridays or Sundays.
Set alerts for specific trips
You don’t have to convince us that searching for airfare can feel like work. The good news is there are some tools that can do some of the work for you.
Set up fare alerts for your Newark travel dates, adding a few alerts if your dates or departure airports are flexible. We recommend doing this ahead of the Goldilocks Window we talked about so you can see prices drop during that time.
Newark is a very busy airport with flights from more than 50 countries and nearly 90 US cities; it’s also the largest hub for United Airlines, so your flight options should be plentiful.
