Top tips for finding a cheap flight to Munich (MUC)
Book in the Goldilocks Window
While there’s no specific day of the week when airline tickets are magically cheaper, there is a time period when flights are generally cheapest. It’s not too far in advance of your trip but not too close either. We call it the Goldilocks Window, and it’s about 1–3 months before a domestic flight and 2–8 months before an international trip.
That said, if you’re planning to travel during a peak season, it would be wise to start looking on the earlier end. So, if you’re planning to visit Munich for Oktoberfest in late September, you might want to start looking for flights in February.
Last-minute deals are few and far between, especially during busy travel seasons, with fare jumps happening at the 21-, 14-, and 7-days points before departure dates; book before then if you can.
Use the Greek Islands Trick
Sometimes, flight prices never drop, especially during peak travel seasons or for major events like Oktoberfest. Before you give up and abandon the trip, try our Greek Islands Trick. Despite the name, it can be used all over Europe to find cheap flights to expensive destinations.
The point is to get yourself as close to the place you really want to go for the lowest price possible, then find a budget airline flight or other form of transportation to reach your final destination. Say flights from Atlanta to Munich in September are $1,200. You could look for flights to London, Zürich, Paris, or another European city instead. If you see a transatlantic flight for around $800 and a European regional airline flight for under $200, you could still save a couple hundred bucks. You can also look into train tickets, which can be even cheaper. This type of planning takes more work, but it can save you money, which could be used toward, say, a couple of nights in hotels.
Search alternative departure airports
This is like the Greek Islands Trick but in reverse. Travelers living near Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson may have never considered flying out of any other airport. Why would they when the world’s busiest airport is right there? Believe it or not, there may be situations in which you could actually save money by looking at long-haul flights from other cities—even if it means you have to take a short flight from Atlanta to get there.
We see shockingly cheap fares from airports big and small all over the country, and if you’re only looking at flights from your home airport you could miss out. Even if you live in Atlanta, if you see a flight from New York to Munich for $550, it could be worth looking into flights from Atlanta to New York to take advantage of that deal.
Fly when it’s cheaper
One of the easiest ways to save on flights is to fly when they’re less in demand. Shoulder seasons, the months just before and after high season, are great times to save money on flights and hotels but still get decent weather. That’s late March–May and late October–November in Munich. Off season, from January–February, is even cheaper, though the weather isn’t as nice.
Thanksgiving week is a hidden cheap time to travel internationally from the US. With most people traveling domestically during that time, international flights are often cheaper.
Even if you are traveling during peak season, you can still save money by flying on cheaper days. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Saturdays are typically the cheapest days to fly, while Fridays and Sundays are the most expensive.
Set alerts for specific trips
Keeping track of airfare is hard work—we know that firsthand. The good news is that technology can take some of the work off your hands. Set up fare alerts for your travel itinerary, and you’ll get an email when fares drop into your target price range or by a noteworthy amount. Do this well in advance of your trip, ideally before the Goldilocks Window, so you can see prices drop during that time. If your travel dates are flexible or you want to try the Greek Islands Trick and fly out of a different airport, set multiple alerts.
Munich International Airport is the second-largest airport in Germany, with nonstop flights from around 60 countries, so you have decent travel options. Visitors from about a dozen US cities spread across the country can reach Munich on a nonstop flight, while others will make one connection.
