Top tips for finding a cheap flight to Hong Kong
Book in the Goldilocks Window
There’s no magic formula for finding the cheapest flight, but there is a time when you can bet prices will be lowest. It’s not too far in advance of your trip but not too last minute either. We call it the Goldilocks Window, and it’s 1–3 months before a domestic trip and 2–8 months before an international trip. If you’re traveling during peak season, you should start looking and booking on the earlier side. For example, if you’re hoping to visit Hong Kong in January, you’d be wise to start looking for flights in June.
Last-minute deals are extremely rare during busy travel periods. Fares actually jump at the 21-, 14-, and 7-day points before departure dates, so it’s best to not hold off until the last month.
Use the Greek Islands Trick
Sometimes, fares just don't budge, especially during busy travel seasons. That’s why we came up with the Greek Islands Trick, which, despite the name, can work for most destinations. Basically, you look for the cheapest flight you can find that gets you close to your final destination. If you can score a great deal to a nearby city, you can look for regional budget airline flights or another option for the last leg.
For example, if you want to fly from Los Angeles to Hong Kong in January, flights could be upwards of $1,300. Instead, look for fares to Shanghai. If you see an amazing deal, you can then look for cheap flights from Shanghai to Hong Kong. (Note that depending on which country you fly into first, you may need a visa, which can complicate things. Be sure to plan ahead and do your research). This type of planning requires more work, but in some cases it can save you a ton of money.
Search alternative departure airports
Similarly, you can save money by looking at alternate departure airports. Say you live in Phoenix, and flights to Hong Kong are out of your price range. Look for flights from LAX instead. If you see a great deal, you can then look for cheap flights from Phoenix to LA—or even make the drive.
We see deals from airports all over the country every single day, so we know it pays to look for flights from cities even far from your own. It doesn’t hurt to check out flights from New York, even if you live far away in Phoenix. If you see a deal for $700, it could be worth a $200 flight from Phoenix to New York. The point is: You never know what deals you may find, and savvy travelers can save by playing around with flights.
Fly when it’s cheaper
One of our favorite times to travel is during shoulder seasons, the periods just before and after a destination’s high season. Flights and hotels are typically cheaper than during peak season, but you’ll still usually have nice weather. October–early December is a great time to visit Hong Kong, as is April–early June.
Thanksgiving week is a hidden cheap week to travel from the US. With most Americans traveling domestically for Thanksgiving, domestic flight prices rise while international flight prices drop.
Even if you are traveling during a peak season, like July–August or January–February, you can still save money by flying on what are generally the cheapest days: Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays. Fridays and Sundays are the most expensive days to fly, so avoid them if you can.
Set alerts for specific trips
Keeping track of fluctuating airfare can be frustrating, but don’t despair. Technology can do most of it for you. Set up fare alerts for your Hong Kong itinerary, and you’ll get an email when prices drop. It’s best to do this before the Goldilocks Window we talked about before so you can see prices fall during that time. Also, set up multiple alerts if your dates or airports are flexible.
Hong Kong has a large airport and is the main hub for Cathay Pacific. It is very well connected to Asia and the Middle East, as well as most of Europe. US visitors in New York, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, and San Francisco can reach Hong Kong on a nonstop flight, while others will have to make one connection.

May and June are the cheapest months to visit, but it can be hot, muggy, and rainy. It gets even hotter and wetter from July–August, which is peak travel season but not the best time to visit if you can help it.

Cathay Pacific operates a number of lounges at HKG. The first class lounges include The Wing near gates 1–4, and The Pier, near gate 63. The Wing has quiet rest cabanas with baths, rain showers, a bed, and a working space. There’s also a full restaurant, a champagne bar, workstations, and plenty of lounge seating. The Pier has similar amenities, including day suites with daybeds and work areas, an a la carte menu, a cocktail bar, and a spa. The lounges are open to Cathay Pacific and Oneworld carrier first class passengers, as well as Cathay Diamond members.
Cathay Pacific’s three business class lounges include The Deck, The Wing, and The Pier. The Deck near gate 6 has a noodle bar and restaurant, a lounge area with work stations, and shower rooms. The Pier near gate 65 also has an Asian restaurant, teahouse, food hall, shower suites, and workstations. And The Wing near gate 2 has a noodle bar, a full-service bar, workstations, and lounge seating areas. These lounges are open to Cathay Pacific first and business class passengers, as well as Cathay Pacific Diamond, Gold, and Silver members.
Club Autus, located near gate 201 and operated by Hong Kong Airlines, offers a buffet and snacks, non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages, and free wifi. It is open for HKA business class passengers and Fortune Wings Club Platinum and Gold cardholders.
The Plaza Premium lounges are open to all passengers. There are locations at gate 1 (first and regular location), gate 35, and gate 60. All locations have beer and wine, a buffet, and free wifi. The Plaza Premium First location near gate 1 also has a full-service bar. All locations except for the lounge at Gate 1 have showers. Prices start at $80 for two hours.
What are the rules for traveling with pets to HKG?
Dogs and cats cannot enter Hong Kong in the cabin; they must be flown as cargo. With the exception of service animals, pets are not allowed in the airport. There are a few options to get from HKG to Hong Kong.
- By taxi: The red taxis at Hong Kong Airport go to the City Center. The trip takes about 30 minutes and will cost around $45.
- By public transportation: Airport Express trains run from the airport to Hong Kong’s central train station 5–6 times an hour. The trip takes 25 minutes and costs about $13. There is also the A11 bus, which stops at City Hall. Buses depart every 20 minutes and take a little over an hour to reach the city; they only cost around $5.
How long is the flight to Hong Kong?
The length of the flight to Hong Kong depends on where you’re visiting from. From around Asia, your flight time could be anywhere from 2–7 hours. From Australia or New Zealand, it’s 9–11 hours.
You can fly nonstop from San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Vancouver to Hong Kong in about 15.5 hours, and from New York, Boston, Chicago, and Toronto in 15–16.5 hours. From elsewhere in the US or Canada you’ll have to make a connection.
From Europe, the nonstop flight is 12–14 hours, from Dubai it’s 7, and from Istanbul it’s 10. From much of the rest of the world—including all of Africa (except Ethiopia) and South America—you’ll have to make at least one stop.
