Top tips for finding a cheap flight to Frankfurt (FRA)

Book in the Goldilocks Window

There’s no magic formula for the exact perfect day to book a flight at the cheapest fare, but there is a window when flights are typically cheapest. We call it the Goldilocks Window because it’s not too close to, yet not too far from, your flight. This just-right time period is 1–3 months before a domestic flight and 2–8 months before an international flight.

However, if you plan to travel during a peak travel season, or if your trip has specific date requirements and no flexibility, we recommend planning even further in advance. If you want to visit Frankfurt in July, for example, you should start looking for flights in January.

Don’t hold out for last-minute deals. They’re few and far between during busy travel seasons, with fare jumps happening 21, 14, and 7 days in advance, so it’s best to book before those points if at all possible.

Use the Greek Islands Trick

Sometimes, even if you’re closely keeping track of flights, they never seem to get any cheaper. Before you give up and pick a different destination, though, try our beloved Greek Islands Trick. Luckily, it works all over Europe and not just the Greek Islands.

Basically, you try to get as close to the city you really want to visit as possible for the cheapest price, then find a budget airline flight or other transit option for the last leg. So, if you want to visit Frankfurt from Chicago but prices are too expensive, look at flights to Berlin, Zürich, or London instead. From there, you can look for a budget airline flight or train tickets. It takes more work, but sometimes adding two travel options together is significantly cheaper than one flight.

Search alternative departure airports

You can also look at departing from an airport that’s not your home airport. If you live in San Diego, for example, and flights to Frankfurt are super expensive, look for flights from Los Angeles instead. If there’s a great deal, it might be worth the drive or train trip. Sometimes, it can be worth looking even farther away and taking a repositioning flight to get there.

We see deals from airports around the country every day, so it can pay to play around with departure cities. If you see a $450 deal from Chicago to Frankfurt in the summer, for example, it might be worth looking into flights from San Diego to Chicago. If you can find a flight for around $250, the two combined could still be cheaper than flying from San Diego to Frankfurt.

Fly when it’s cheaper

Frankfurt doesn’t see many tourists from December–early March, and therefore flights and hotels are cheapest during that time. The more that people want to visit, the more airlines can charge for flights; you can save money by avoiding peak seasons, like summer in Frankfurt.

But, if visiting in the depths of winter doesn’t sound fun to you, try shoulder seasons. These are the periods just before and after high season, like late March to early June and October to November in Frankfurt. You’ll still get decent weather but lower prices than in peak season. Thanksgiving can also be a sneaky time to save, as most US travelers fly domestically during that week, so airlines sometimes discount international flights.

Even if you’re traveling during peak season, try to look for fares on what are generally the cheapest days to fly: Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays. Avoid Fridays and Sundays, the most expensive days to fly, if you can.

Set alerts for specific trips

Perhaps the easiest way to find cheap flights is to leave it up to technology. Set fare alerts for your travel dates, and you’ll get an email when prices drop. It’s best to do this before the Goldilocks Window we mentioned above so you can see deals during that time. If your dates or airports are flexible, you should set multiple alerts to cover your bases.

Frankfurt is a busy airport that is well-served by cities in Europe, much of the US, and dozens of other airports around the world. Many US travelers can reach Frankfurt on a nonstop flight, and almost everyone can get there with one stop or less.
